Band Director
Joshua Hurst
Joshua Hurst is currently in his ninth year of teaching, with a career focused on striving to help every student feel valued and connected to something larger than themselves and fostering musical excellence across multiple ensembles.
He began his teaching career with a half-year appointment at South Summit High School in Kamas, before spending eight years at Maple Mountain High School with four of those years also teaching woodwind classes at Maple Grove Middle School where he led significant program growth and musical excellence. This past July he became the Director of Bands at Cedar Valley High School, continuing his commitment to developing comprehensive band programs that support student achievement across all aspects of the band program.
During his time at Maple Mountain, Josh oversaw the expansion of the marching band program from 35 students to over 145 participants, while also establishing a second concert band and jazz band, both of which have qualified for their state events. Under his leadership, the marching band placed in the top three of its division every year from 2017 through 2025. The program has also been recognized as a BOA St. George finalist for the past three years, along with placing in the top three of Class AAAA in the previous two seasons, one with Maple Mountain and the other with Cedar Valley. His concert and jazz ensembles have been consistent qualifiers and recipients of superior ratings at the State Band and State Jazz Band events.
Josh earned his Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Utah Valley University, where he received the UVU Award of Merit in Music Education. He later completed his Master of Music in Music Education through Central Washington University’s American Band College. His work as an educator has been recognized with the Nebo School District PEAK Award, as well as the Alpine School District RISE Award and Faculty of the Month honors.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Josh has been actively involved in professional service throughout his career, serving on several committees for UMEA and the Utah Marching Band Circuit along with being a Fine Arts Team Lead for Band in Nebo School District. He values collaboration, mentorship, and supporting educators at all stages of their careers, and believes strongly in the role of professional organizations in strengthening music education statewide. As a performer, he maintains involvement with the Utah Wind Symphony, viewing performance as a way to model lifelong musicianship in support of his work as an educator.
Josh is currently transitioning with his family from Spanish Fork to Eagle Mountain. He and his beautiful wife, Cambri, are raising three children, Rowan (6), Maylee (3), and Sophie (1), and enjoy spending time together at home, often around their extensive board game collection.
